Alan Hansen, the former Liverpool and Scotland center-back, aged 68, faces serious health issues, as announced by Liverpool FC. The club expressed their support for their “legendary” former captain who is hospitalized. Hansen aided Partick Thistle’s promotion before his memorable 14-year spell with Liverpool, commencing in 1977. He played a key role in Liverpool’s 1970s and 1980s success, winning eight First Division titles. Additionally, he secured three European Cups and two FA Cups during that period. These achievements solidified his legacy as a key figure in the club’s success during that era.
Liverpool FC stated that they are in close communication with Hansen’s family, offering support during this challenging time. They expressed their thoughts, wishes and hopes for Hansen and his family. Alongside winning four League Cups with Liverpool, Hansen also represented Scotland 26 times and participated in the 1982 World Cup. Former teammate John Aldridge, now chairman of Forever Reds expressed solidarity with Alan Hansen, wishing him a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, Hansen’s former Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker shared his thoughts, expressing shock at the news.
Hansen transitioned into a renowned pundit after retiring in 1991, contributing to Match of the Day until 2014. Known for his insightful analysis, Hansen became a fixture on football coverage alongside notable personalities such as Des Lynam, Lineker, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Shearer and Sir Trevor Brooking. One of Hansen’s most famous moments as a pundit came in 1995 when he famously remarked on a Manchester United defeat at Aston Villa, declaring, “You can’t win anything with kids.” Featuring Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham, the team secured the FA Cup and Premier League Double.
