Borussia Dortmund Parts Ways with Terzic After Wembley Loss

Borussia Dortmund have ended their association with manager Edin Terzic after he requested “to terminate his contract immediately”. Under Terzic’s guidance, Dortmund reached the Champions League final in the 2023-24 season, narrowly losing to Real Madrid at Wembley. The German club stated they agreed to Terzic’s request following “a joint discussion”.

“After the Wembley game, I requested a meeting with the club’s senior management. After nine years at BVB, including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach, I believe it’s time for the club to begin a new era with a fresh face on the touchline,” said the 41-year-old Terzic.

“Those close to me know this decision has been incredibly tough but after discussions, my feelings haven’t changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you, and see you soon.” Terzic started coaching at Dortmund’s academy from 2010 to 2013 before becoming Bilic’s assistant at Besiktas.

In 2015, he joined Slaven Bilic at Premier League side West Ham but left after Bilic was dismissed in November 2017. He returned to Dortmund the following year as assistant to Lucien Favre. Upon Favre’s departure in December 2020, Terzic took on the role of interim boss for the remainder of the season, leading the team to German Cup final victory against RB Leipzig.

He subsequently transitioned to the club’s technical director before assuming the manager’s position in 2022. Last season, Dortmund narrowly missed the Bundesliga title, finishing as runners-up after failing to beat Mainz. They followed this with a fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 season, securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.

“Edin Terzic has made an exceptional contribution during his tenure at BVB, and we are deeply grateful to him,” stated Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. “Edin and I will always remain close friends.”
