FA Cup Win Secures Ten Hag’s Role, But Uncertainties Persist

The FA Cup victory occurred seventeen days before manager Erik ten Hag learned he will stay following a comprehensive performance review of the season. United sources described the outcome of the two-week evaluation as “clear,” although they considered all options, including sacking Ten Hag. They also spoke to potential replacements before and after the FA Cup final.

Changes are underway at Old Trafford. The key question is whether the manager and the owners can find enough common ground for their partnership to work long-term. Despite both United and Ten Hag feeling ready to move forward, several issues remain, including Ten Hag’s role in a new structure that may reduce his influence, summer transfers, and a new contract.

What did the review consider?

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United director Sir Dave Brailsford began a detailed assessment of the club’s inner workings in January and felt unimpressed. Ten Hag described the situation he inherited 18 months earlier as “a mess.” Ratcliffe, in an interview with BBC sports editor Dan Roan on February 21, emphasized the need for a thoughtful approach rather than quick fixes. By early March, Ratcliffe’s Ineos group felt it might be unfair to judge any manager by the results given the club’s existing setup.

They planned to bring in Jason Wilcox as technical director and Dan Ashworth as football director, alongside Omar Berrada, who will take over as chief executive on July 13. Gary O’Driscoll already joined from Arsenal as head of sports medicine, aiming to improve player fitness amid a severe injury crisis, the worst in the Premier League. Ten Hag acknowledged the lengthy injury list but did not elaborate on the cause.

How close did Ten Hag come to the sack?

Results can change perceptions in football. From March 30 to May 6, United struggled, dropping points and nearly losing an FA Cup semi-final against Coventry. They eventually won on penalties, but a subsequent 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace highlighted their issues. Criticism from pundits, like Jamie Carragher, further fueled speculation about Ten Hag’s future.

Despite stories suggesting Ten Hag would be sacked regardless of the FA Cup final result, United’s victory over Manchester City shifted the narrative. Factors favoring Ten Hag’s retention included his dedication, the team’s injury issues, the development of young players, and fan support.

What about transfers?

Ratcliffe believes in a collaborative approach to recruitment, with Ten Hag providing input but not having final decision-making power. They scrutinized recent big-money signings for being either too expensive, injury-prone, or underperforming. United plans to sell players like Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho but most of the first-team squad will likely remain. Disagreements over transfers are possible.

Is Ten Hag still at risk?

Given that they considered other managers for Ten Hag’s position, his job security is not entirely stable. Talks over a contract extension are pending, and some argue there is no need for immediate contract discussions since Ten Hag’s current deal extends to 2026. Another poor league finish could jeopardize his job.

What happens next?

As pre-season training begins in early July, Ten Hag is not expected to address his situation until the U.S. tour. Winning the FA Cup made Ten Hag the fourth United manager to win major trophies in successive seasons. He now has the opportunity to continue his journey at the club, though the future remains uncertain.
