Rodrigo Bentancur Apologizes to Son Heung-min for Racial Slur

Rodrigo Bentancur, Tottenham midfielder, issued a heartfelt apology to captain Son Heung-min after making a racial slur during an appearance on Uruguayan television. The incident unfolded on the Canal 10 show Por La Camiseta, where host Rafa Cotelo asked Bentancur about obtaining a shirt from a Spurs player. Bentancur’s response, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same,” quickly ignited criticism on social media once the clip spread widely. Realizing the gravity of his comment, Bentancur promptly took to Instagram to publicly apologize to Son Heung-min.

Addressing Son as “Sonny brother,” he expressed deep regret over what he described as a “very bad joke.” Bentancur went on to emphasize his profound respect and admiration for Son, firmly stating that he never intended to disrespect or harm him or anyone else. As of now, Son Heung-min has not publicly responded to the apology. This incident is particularly sensitive given that both players have been teammates at Tottenham Hotspur since Bentancur’s arrival from Juventus in January 2022.

Currently, Rodrigo Bentancur is focusing on representing Uruguay at the upcoming Copa America in the United States, scheduled to commence on 20 June. The midfielder’s remarks have underscored the ongoing importance of sensitivity and respect in professional sports, highlighting the critical need for education and awareness surrounding racial issues.
