Antony's £81m Transfer: One of United's Worst Deals?

Antony’s name is often mentioned in discussions about the “worst” transfer deal in Manchester United’s long history, though labeling such a deal is subjective. Despite his compelling personal story which includes overcoming poverty and tragedy in Brazil, his impact on the pitch at United has been disappointing, making him a costly misstep. Signed in August 2022 for £81.3 million, Antony was a priority for manager Erik ten Hag, who had worked with him at Ajax.
Initially, he impressed, scoring in his first three league matches but this early promise quickly fizzled out. Over 96 appearances for United, Antony has netted only 12 goals and provided five assists. His last goal came in a 7-0 EFL Cup win over Barnsley in September and his most recent assist was in April 2024, a cross for Alejandro Garnacho in a loss to Chelsea.
Despite Ten Hag’s continued backing, even after a nine-month goal drought, Antony has struggled to meet United’s high standards. In January 2024, Ten Hag acknowledged Antony’s potential but stated he needed to return to the high levels he displayed at Ajax. However, Antony’s recent form including a shocking miss in a 1-1 draw against Southampton, showed he was not improving.
His lack of starts under new manager Ruben Amorim and his reduced role at United have further highlighted his failure to live up to expectations. Now on the brink of joining Real Betis on loan, Antony’s United career seems to be winding down. Though he has personal resilience, his high price tag and underwhelming performances will likely leave a lasting mark as one of the club’s most disappointing transfers.
