Ballon d'Or Controversy: Vinicius Overlooked as Rodri Takes Title
Ballon d’Or win by Manchester City’s Rodri over Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior drew strong criticism from Brazilian journalists and politicians, sparking discussions about potential bias in the award’s decision. Vinicius, 24 served as Real Madrid’s top scorer last season and significantly contributed to the club’s Champions League and La Liga titles. Meanwhile, Rodri helped Spain win Euro 2024 and played a crucial role in Manchester City’s Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup victories.
Brazilian commentators argued that voters overlooked Vinicius due to his vocal stance against racism, particularly regarding the abuse he faces in Spain. Guga Chacra of Globo News suggested that prejudice may have influenced the decision while Gustavo Faldon from Estadão called it the “biggest injustice in the history of the Ballon d’Or.” He noted that Vinicius’ profile as a Brazilian forward at Real Madrid should have worked in his favor.
Rodrigo Bueno of ESPN Brasil and Milly Lacombe of UOL News stated that the award missed an opportunity to honor a socially conscious player whose dribbling, goals and activism stood out this season. Galvão Bueno a popular Brazilian sports commentator voiced concerns on YouTube about the Ballon d’Or’s “European bias,” claiming that Vinicius’ outspoken opposition to racism counted against him.
Vincent Garcia editor of France Football countered by saying that the vote was close and that Vinicius likely lost points due to competition from fellow Real Madrid nominees Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal which ultimately benefited Rodri. Following the results, Vinicius posted on social media: “I will do it 10 times if I have to. They are not ready,” drawing over 100,000 supportive comments.
Brazil’s minister of racial equality, Anielle Franco praised him, saying, “Racism will never stop us.”
