Barcelona Eyes Seven-Point Lead Against Espanyol
Barcelona will have the opportunity to increase their La Liga lead to seven points when they face city rivals Espanyol on Sunday at 15:15 GMT. Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski leads the league in scoring with 14 goals which is twice as many as any other player. He scored two goals in last weekend’s impressive 4-0 victory against Real Madrid. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague noted that Xavi plays a role in Lewandowski’s success. He added that head coach Hansi Flick has created a tactical system that greatly improves the team’s defense.
Severe flash floods in the Valencia region have caused Real Madrid and Villarreal to postpone their matches this weekend. Both teams currently sit in second and third place in La Liga. Madrid was set to play bottom club Valencia while Villarreal’s match against Rayo Vallecano has also been postponed. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid has lost three of their last five matches across all competitions. They will host struggling Las Palmas on Sunday at 13:00 GMT.
In Serie A, Napoli will aim to maintain their title challenge against third-placed Atalanta as they seek to extend their four-point lead over Inter Milan. Napoli lost to Hellas Verona on matchday one. Since then, they have won nine of their last ten matches. Atalanta boasting the league’s top scorer Mateo Retegui, could cut the gap at the top to three points with a victory. Inter will face struggling Venezia later that day. In Germany, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig lead the Bundesliga with 20 points, five ahead of the competition.
Bayern will host Union Berlin while Leipzig will travel to face Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, in Ligue 1, unbeaten leaders Paris St-Germain will face Lens and Monaco hopes to match their points by beating Angers. Ruben Amorim will lead Sporting against Estrela in Portugal. This match marks his first game since Manchester United appointed him as their new head coach. Sporting aims for its tenth consecutive league win while Porto closely trails behind. In the Netherlands, PSV, who have won all ten of their matches will face second-placed Ajax.
