Benjamin Mendy won a legal battle against Manchester City over unpaid wages and secured the majority of his £11m claim for salary that the club withheld while he faced rape charges. Mendy cleared his name after a retrial last year where the court acquitted him of raping one woman and attempting to rape another. In 2021, Manchester City stopped paying his £500,000 monthly salary after his second arrest which led Mendy to take the club to an employment tribunal.

The tribunal ruled in favor of Mendy, granting him most of the £11m claim for “unauthorized deductions,” but did not award him the full amount due to the five months he spent in custody. Discussions or a future hearing will determine the exact sum. Mendy expressed relief over the decision and urged City to honor the remaining payment and fulfill other contract obligations. He thanked his family, agent and legal team for their support throughout the ordeal.

City continued paying Mendy after his first arrest in 2020 but stopped payments when he faced re-arrest in 2021. The club argued that Mendy’s behavior which included hosting parties during lockdown and violating bail conditions, prompted his suspension and the wage withholding. However, Mendy claimed that the club assured him they would resume his wage payments once he was acquitted. When he sought clarification, City officials did not respond.

After his acquittal, Benjamin Mendy, now playing for Lorient in Ligue 2, expressed gratitude to the jury for focusing on the evidence and thanked those who supported him during his difficult legal battle. Mendy now aims to move forward and rebuild his life after nearly three years of legal and personal turmoil.
