BJ Thompson, a defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, is recovering after experiencing a seizure and cardiac arrest during a team meeting. During a Chiefs team gathering on Thursday, 25-year-old Thompson experienced the incident and was swiftly hospitalized. Those present responded promptly, ensuring he received immediate medical attention, which facilitated his timely care and treatment.

Their swift action contributed to his prompt medical care and treatment. Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs’ VP of sports medicine, praised Thompson’s recovery, affirming his positive progress on Friday.  Burkholder praised the quick response and support from players, security staff, coaches and personnel, highlighting their effective crisis management.

He emphasized their crucial role in handling the situation promptly and efficiently. In response to the medical emergency, the Chiefs decided to cancel a scheduled practice session. Head coach Andy Reid and players delayed media sessions until Friday, allowing the team to prioritize Thompson’s recovery. This decision ensured that they could concentrate fully on supporting their teammate.

BJ Thompson, drafted in last year’s fifth NFL round, played one game for the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs team.  He accompanied the Chiefs players who recently visited the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl victory, joining them in the celebration. Currently in their off-season training program, the Chiefs are set to commence a mandatory mini-camp on Tuesday, continuing their preparations for the upcoming season.
