Bruno Fernandes has expressed regret over the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag, acknowledging his role in the team’s struggles. Ten Hag lost his job following United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham leaving the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. Although a 1-1 draw against Chelsea moved them up a spot, the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP during the international break looms large.

Fernandes, who was appointed captain by Ten Hag, admitted that the players must share the blame for the team’s poor performance. After scoring his first goal of the season from the penalty spot against Chelsea, he felt the pressure and responsibility even more acutely. “It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes,” he told Sky Sports, emphasizing that it’s easier to dismiss one manager than many players.

He later spoke to Ten Hag and apologized for not doing more to support him. Former United captain Roy Keane criticized Fernandes’s remarks, describing them as “too little, too late,” and suggested that the players lacked the necessary leadership and commitment. Ten Hag had often pointed to the team’s failure to convert chances, a sentiment echoed by interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who noted the need to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Van Nistelrooy has yet to communicate with Amorim, who will take over after upcoming matches against PAOK in the Europa League and Leicester in the Premier League. Reflecting on his time at Sporting where Amorim rejuvenated the club, Bruno Fernandes stated, “Ruben Amorim brought excitement back to the club,” indicating his respect for the incoming manager.
