Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of capturing the Bundesliga title took a significant hit on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Augsburg. Aiming to bounce back from their midweek 5-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League, Dortmund started positively when Donyell Malen opened the scoring early on. The Dutch forward finished confidently inside the penalty area after executing a slick give-and-go with striker Serhou Guirassy, who has contributed to ten goals in nine matches across all competitions this season.

Despite their promising start, Borussia Dortmund’s defensive issues resurfaced. Augsburg capitalized midway through the first half when Alexis Claude-Maurice seized a loose ball and struck from 25 yards, beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a low shot. Before halftime, Dortmund nearly regained the lead but Augsburg’s keeper, Nediljko Labrovic thwarted a long-range effort from Marcel Sabitzer.

In the second half, Dortmund continued to struggle defensively with Emre Can’s poor clearance falling to Claude-Maurice again, who curled a shot into the far bottom corner to give Augsburg a 2-1 lead. Marius Wolf had a chance to extend the lead but shot over the bar. Dortmund applied pressure late in the game but their efforts fizzled out when debutant Almugera Kabar received a second yellow card in injury time.

This defeat dropped Dortmund to eighth place in the league leaving them seven points adrift of leaders RB Leipzig while Augsburg climbed to 11th, celebrating their first win over Dortmund in four years. The result underscored Dortmund’s struggles away from home this season as they have yet to secure an away victory in the Bundesliga and have only garnered 13 points from their first eight matches.
