Lucas Bergvall an 18-year-old, delivered the decisive goal late in the game as Tottenham secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Liverpool in a controversial Carabao Cup semi-final first leg. However, Liverpool were left fuming after Bergvall, already on a yellow card, escaped punishment for a reckless tackle on Kostas Tsimikas, an incident missed by referee Stuart Attwell. Adding to the frustration, Tsimikas was off the pitch receiving treatment when Bergvall scored.

The match saw Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou’s faith in youth pay off. Lucas Bergvall impressed with his maturity in midfield, justifying the £8.5m summer investment in the young Swede. Equally vital was 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who made a crucial save to deny Darwin Nunez late on, demonstrating composure despite his recent £12.5m move from Slavia Prague.

Tottenham already hit by a string of injuries and illnesses also lost Rodrigo Bentancur early in the match to a worrying injury that required a stretcher. Despite these setbacks, Spurs controlled much of the game. Pedro Porro missed a clear chance and Dominic Solanke had a goal disallowed for offside but the home side’s resilience held firm. For Liverpool, this was a lackluster performance, uncharacteristic of their strong season under coach Arne Slot.

Despite fielding a strong lineup including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the Premier League leaders struggled to create meaningful chances. Substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold saw a late effort cleared off the line while Nunez had limited impact. Liverpool will feel a sense of injustice but remain confident that a one-goal deficit is manageable in the return leg at Anfield. Spurs will draw satisfaction from their hard-fought victory and aim to build on their narrow advantage in the second leg.
