Sandro Tonali Scores Twice in Newcastle’s 3-1 Win Over Brentford

Sandro Tonali showcased his brilliance as Newcastle defeated Brentford 3-1 at St James’ Park securing a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The Italian midfielder, whom Newcastle signed for £55m in 2023 scored twice in the first half, emphasizing his growing impact under Eddie Howe. Tonali started the scoring with a precise 20-yard strike after Tino Livramento partially cleared a cross. He then doubled the lead with a composed side-foot volley from Anthony Gordon’s corner.

Returning this season after serving a 10-month betting ban, the 24-year-old celebrated his opener with a heart gesture to fans, dispelling rumors linking him to Juventus. Manager Eddie Howe commended Tonali’s performance and noted his adaptation to a deeper midfield role. “He’s showing all the qualities we saw when we signed him,” Howe said. “We’re finally starting to see the best of him.” Newcastle cemented their dominance when captain Bruno Guimaraes assisted Fabian Schar for the team’s third goal.

The Magpies hit the woodwork twice and created several opportunities with Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Gordon failing to convert. Brentford struggled to cope after losing key defenders Sepp van den Berg and Ethan Pinnock. Thomas Frank’s team managed only two shots on target until Yoane Wissa scored a late consolation. Brentford continuing their poor form away from home have now lost eight of nine matches against Premier League opponents this season.

The victory fuels Newcastle fans’ hopes of ending their 69-year domestic trophy drought. Howe, who has transformed Newcastle into Champions League contenders became the first manager since Sir Bobby Robson to lead the team to two semi-finals. Newcastle awaits the Carabao Cup semi-final draw which takes place after Thursday’s quarter-final clash between Tottenham and Manchester United as they aim for long-awaited silverware.
