Caroline Weir Focused on Euro 2025 as Finland Play-Off Looms
Caroline Weir, Scotland midfielder has described qualifying for Euro 2025 as “everything” for the team ahead of their crucial play-off final second leg in Finland. The first leg at Easter Road ended in a 0-0 draw, leaving Scotland with everything to play for in Helsinki at the Bolt Arena. With captain Rachel Corsie sidelined by injury, Weir, who plays for Real Madrid will captain her country and lead them into what she calls a game that “has been in our minds a long, long time.”
The 29-year-old emphasized the significance of the match, stating that qualifying would mean “everything” to the players and the country. Scotland has had a strong Nations League B campaign, remaining unbeaten and securing a 5-0 aggregate victory over Hungary in the semi-finals. Finland topped Montenegro in their semi-final and have remained strong at home, staying unbeaten for nearly 18 months.
Scotland’s head coach, Pedro Martinez Losa, spoke about the team’s positive trajectory and their motivation to seize the opportunity of qualifying for their second European Championship after their 2017 appearance. While acknowledging past disappointments including a World Cup play-off loss to the Republic of Ireland, Weir stressed that the team’s focus is solely on this final push for the Euros.
Martinez Losa also confirmed that striker Martha Thomas, who had been ill before the first leg, is now “much better.” Both he and Caroline Weir are preparing for an intense second leg. Weir noted that Finland will be a tough opponent but Scotland is determined to win and qualify.
