Ademola Lookman shone as Atalanta secured a convincing 3-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. With this win, Atalanta earned four points from their first two Champions League fixtures this season having previously drawn 0-0 against Arsenal in their campaign opener. The match’s outcome appeared certain from the start as Lookman played a pivotal role in creating the opening goal.
In the 21st minute, he delivered a curling cross from the left that Albania captain Berat Djimsiti flicked into the net. Lookman, who had already struck the crossbar earlier extended Atalanta’s lead just before halftime. He finished from the bottom corner with a precise shot capitalizing on a pass from Sead Kolasinac. Atalanta continued to dominate after the break, making it 3-0 just three minutes into the second half.
Raoul Bellanova took advantage of Shakhtar’s hesitant defense heading in a cross from Davide Zappacosta at the back post. Shakhtar struggled to create scoring opportunities, managing just one point from their two matches so far. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has forced Shakhtar to play their home matches at Schalke’s venue adding to the challenges they face this season.
Atalanta’s performance not only showcased their attacking prowess but also solidified their position in the Champions League group stage with Ademola Lookman emerging as a key player in their campaign.
