Arne Slot celebrated a victorious debut at Anfield in his first home Champions League match as Liverpool boss guiding the Reds to a 2-0 win over the resilient Italian side Bologna. With goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, Slot became the first manager in Liverpool’s history to win eight of his first nine games in charge despite a few nervous moments throughout the hard-fought contest.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Mac Allister converted a close-range shot following an excellent low cross from Salah. Both teams saw their goals disallowed for offside with Thijs Dallinga’s effort for Bologna and Darwin Nunez’s for Liverpool ruled out. The Italians pushed hard and finished the first half strongly. Dan Ndoye struck the post and Bologna took advantage of a defensive error from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, Alisson made crucial saves to deny Kacper Urbanski. Bologna continued to pressure after halftime with Alisson saving a shot from Riccardo Orsolini and Urbanski missing a great chance. Salah sealed the victory with his 49th Champions League goal by cutting in onto his left foot. He curled a beautiful shot into the top corner, further solidifying Arne Slot’s impressive start.

Liverpool now sits atop the Premier League with six points from their opening two Champions League matches. This includes a notable 3-1 victory over AC Milan. With six matches remaining in the group stage, they are well-positioned for automatic qualification to the knockout rounds. Slot expressed his desire to achieve more than just an early winning streak, emphasizing the continuous pursuit of improvement.

Although Bologna finished fifth in Serie A last season, they delivered a commendable performance at Anfield. They created moments of concern for the hosts before Salah’s stunning strike secured Liverpool’s second consecutive win. Liverpool will face RB Leipzig next as they aim to maintain their perfect start.
