Bukayo Saka celebrates scoring the second goal for Arsenal against Paris St-Germain.
Arsenal claimed their first victory in the new Champions League format by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. After drawing their opening match against Atalanta, Mikel Arteta’s side took charge with two first-half goals. Kai Havertz scored with a header and Bukayo Saka netted a free-kick that surprised PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Despite some threatening moments from PSG including shots from Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves that hit the woodwork, Arsenal established dominance early on. Havertz opened the scoring in the 20th minute heading in Leandro Trossard’s cross before Saka’s set-piece drifted past Donnarumma giving the Gunners a crucial two-goal lead.
In the second half, PSG ramped up their pressure but Arsenal held firm, showcasing their growing maturity as a team. Although Gabriel Martinelli missed a chance to extend the lead, Arsenal managed to maintain control and secure the victory comfortably. Arteta also handed a debut to £31 million signing Mikel Merino, who had previously missed out due to injury.
Arsenal’s performance demonstrated their development under Arteta particularly during the strong opening 45 minutes that set the tone for the match. Meanwhile, PSG is experiencing a major transition as they have let go of several superstar players, including Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.
The team is now relying more on younger talents like 18-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery guided by experienced coach Luis Enrique. While PSG showed signs of promise, they clearly remain a work in progress and may not pose a serious threat in this season’s Champions League.
Arsenal’s win not only boosts their confidence but also signals their ambitions in the competition.
