Bayern Munich ended their two-match losing streak in the Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Benfica at home, thanks to a 67th-minute header from Jamal Musiala. The midfielder latched onto a cross from Harry Kane and scored the only goal of the match securing a vital win for Bayern, who had come under pressure after back-to-back losses to Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Notably, Bayern dominated the game against a defensive Benfica side. Kane and Serge Gnabry both had shots saved in the first half. Furthermore, in the second half, substitute Leroy Sane had two efforts denied by Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. Bayern desperately needed this win after losing their previous two European fixtures. With the victory, they moved up to 17th place in the new 36-team Champions League league phase, tying on points with Benfica in 19th.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s form in the Bundesliga remains strong. The team sits three points clear at the top and has won their last four league games, scoring 16 goals and conceding none. Importantly, Musiala has been key to their resurgence, continuing his fine run of form with a goal in each of his past four matches across all competitions. Impressively, three of those goals have come from headers with the 21-year-old now showing a newfound aerial threat.
Musiala’s influence was evident throughout the match, as he kept Benfica’s defense on edge with his direct runs, creating space for his teammates. Consequently, the home crowd showed their appreciation by giving him a standing ovation when he was substituted for Thomas Muller in the closing minutes. With Musiala leading the charge, Bayern will look to continue their recovery in both Europe and the Bundesliga, aiming for further success in the coming matches.
