Celtic’s unbeaten start to the season came crashing down as Borussia Dortmund delivered a stunning performance led by the electrifying Karim Adeyemi. Despite Daizen Maeda equalizing Emre Can’s early penalty, Celtic quickly fell behind again. Adeyemi’s hat-trick complemented by a second penalty from Serhou Guirassy allowed Dortmund to race to a commanding 5-1 lead by halftime.
Celtic started poorly when Jamie Gittens earned a penalty after Kasper Schmeichel brought him down which Can converted calmly. Maeda quickly equalized with a well-placed cross from Arne Engels but the joy faded fast. Adeyemi proving too quick for the Celtic defense, scored twice before halftime including a stunning long-range effort. Guirassy scored a penalty after a foul on Adeyemi, further solidifying Dortmund’s dominance.
Adeyemi then completed his hat-trick with another impressive strike. In the second half, Guirassy scored again after capitalizing on a mistake by Alistair Johnson while Felix Nmecha added the final goal completing the rout. Celtic struggled to contain Dortmund’s attacking threat throughout the match. Manager Brendan Rodgers must address the defensive lapses as they prepare for their upcoming match against Atalanta.
Dortmund showcased their potential to contend in the tournament despite losing key players from last season’s final. Their blend of speed and skill, especially from Adeyemi and Gittens left Celtic’s defense in disarray. This match marked a significant challenge for Celtic, who have a history of suffering heavy defeats against top European teams.
As they look to rebound, the Scottish champions must find a way to restore their confidence and improve their defensive solidity.
