George Ilenikhena Strikes as Monaco Shocks Barcelona

George Ilenikhena the Nigerian striker made a memorable Champions League debut scoring the winning goal as Monaco upset 10-man Barcelona. The 18-year-old substitute netted in the 71st minute racing onto Vanderson’s long ball and blasting his shot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Eric Garcia earned a red card just 10 minutes into the match for fouling Takumi Minamino after Ter Stegen played a poor pass out from the back.

Subsequently, Monaco quickly took advantage with Maghnes Akliouche slotting in the first goal. However, Barcelona’s 16-year-old star, Lamine Yamal responded by scoring his first Champions League goal cutting inside and drilling a low shot into the bottom corner. Despite Yamal’s effort, Ilenikhena ultimately sealed the victory for Monaco with his strike.

His goal made him Monaco’s youngest scorer in Champions League history at 18 years and 34 days breaking Kylian Mbappé’s record. Additionally, George Ilenikhena became the first player to score against the same team in consecutive Champions League matches for different clubs having netted against Barcelona last year while playing for Royal Antwerp.

His composed finish overshadowed Yamal, who has had an outstanding year becoming the second youngest scorer in Champions League history at 17 years and 68 days only behind teammate Ansu Fati. Moreover, Monaco had more chances to extend their lead as Vanderson fired a shot wide and Minamino’s effort deflected off the crossbar.

Folarin Balogun’s late penalty was overturned after VAR determined he went down too easily. Despite Barcelona’s defeat, Yamal continues to shine, recently becoming the youngest-ever Ballon d’Or nominee.
