Liverpool: Champions League Favorites After Perfect Start

Liverpool are making a strong case as Champions League favorites this season with a perfect record in Europe and top performances in the Premier League. Under new manager Arne Slot, they’ve won all six of their Champions League group-stage matches securing their spot in the last 16 after a 1-0 win at Girona. Slot the only manager to win his first six Champions League games with an English club has seen his side dominate including notable wins over AC Milan, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool’s momentum is “ridiculous,” citing their form and strong squad depth. However, he cautions that the situation could change as the season unfolds. Ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock also praises Liverpool’s toughness, noting that they’ll be a challenging team in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Before the group stages, Opta gave Liverpool only a 4.6% chance of winning the Champions League but their incredible run has seen that figure rise to 20.7%, making them the current favorites. Their chances of reaching the semifinals stand at 51.3%. The return of goalkeeper Alisson, who made a crucial contribution in the 1-0 win at Girona, further strengthens their case. Slot called him “the best goalkeeper in the world” after his performance.

Mohamed Salah is also in red-hot form, scoring 16 goals in 22 games this season including a penalty against Girona. With a firing Salah, a rock-solid Alisson and a manager making a fairytale start, Liverpool look like strong contenders to win the Champions League this season.
