Cristiano Ronaldo Hits 133rd Goal as Portugal Defeats Poland
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 133rd goal for Portugal as they defeated Poland in the Nations League. The captain narrowly missed an opportunity, hitting the crossbar from close range but Portugal quickly took the lead through Bernardo Silva. The Manchester City player volleyed in a goal following a knockdown by Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Ronaldo then increased Portugal’s advantage, slotting in a rebound after Rafael Leão’s shot struck the post during a brilliant run. This marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s third Nations League goal in three games although he had failed to score at Euro 2024. He was substituted for Diogo Jota in the 63rd minute. Portugal appeared to be in control until Piotr Zielinski scored for Poland, reigniting their hopes for a comeback.
However, a late own goal by Southampton defender Jan Bednarek sealed the win for Portugal as he inadvertently slid Nuno Mendes’ cross into his own net. In a notable moment for Poland, they handed an international debut to 19-year-old Maxi Oyedele, who was born in Salford. Oyedele whose mother is Polish recently transferred to Legia Warsaw from Manchester United after spending last season on loan at Forest Green.
With this victory, Portugal has now won all three of their Nations League matches while Poland faces a setback. Portugal will next face Scotland, who have lost all three of their matches at Hampden Park on Tuesday. The match promises to be crucial for both teams as they aim to secure a favorable position in the league.
