Dani Olmo’s Future at Barcelona at Risk After Appeal Rejected
Dani Olmo’s registration for the remainder of the season has failed once again, as Barcelona lost another attempt just one day before the deadline. The 26-year-old, who signed from RB Leipzig for a reported €60 million (£51 million) in August was initially registered only for the first half of the season due to Barcelona’s ongoing issues with La Liga’s wage cap.
Last week, a court rejected Barcelona’s first appeal to re-register Olmo and a second court upheld that decision on Monday. As a result, Olmo may not play for Barcelona starting January 1. La Liga explained that the court dismissed Olmo’s precautionary registration request because he did not meet the necessary conditions for such a measure.
The league also reinforced its authority, stating that its Delegate Commission’s decisions regarding budgeting rules have never faced challenges from any club including Barcelona. La Liga’s Budget Validation Body decided not to register Olmo and multiple committees including its Financial Fair Play Committee and UEFA’s Second Instance Licensing Committee, confirmed this decision.
Despite this, Barcelona took the case to court but now faces the challenge of finding an alternative solution. If the club cannot register Olmo, he may become a free agent with Premier League clubs reportedly interested in him. To raise funds, Barcelona is exploring the sale of VIP boxes at Camp Nou which could generate over €100 million.
However, La Liga must approve this plan. Dani Olmo a former Barcelona youth player has enjoyed a strong season, scoring six goals in 15 appearances. Barcelona currently sits third in La Liga, three points behind Atletico Madrid.
