Danny Batth scored an injury-time equalizer, rescuing a 2-2 draw for Blackburn Rovers against Championship leaders Leeds United in a dramatic finale at Elland Road. Pascal Struijk had earlier secured what seemed like a decisive lead for Leeds, confidently converting a penalty after the referee ruled that Dominic Hyam had fouled Mateo Joseph in the box. The game unfolded under dreary New Year’s Day conditions and lacked action until the closing stages.

Leeds controlled possession but struggled to break through Blackburn’s organized defense. Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson created Leeds’ best first-half chances but Aynsley Pears easily saved Struijk’s header. Blackburn generated a first-half opportunity when Hyam misjudged a corner, causing a scramble in the box but Leeds cleared the danger. In the second half, Leeds ramped up the pressure as Patrick Bamford, Willy Gnonto and Mateo Joseph entered the fray and injected much-needed energy.

Aaronson narrowly missed, James tested Pears with a free kick and Gnonto volleyed wide before Struijk converted the penalty. Blackburn immediately countered, using a late corner to level the game. Hyam directed a header to Batth, who reacted swiftly to score from close range and deny Leeds a 10th consecutive home league win. Leeds fought for a winner during 11 minutes of stoppage time but Pears delivered a stunning save to block Max Wober’s volley.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke admitted his team delivered a below-par performance but commended their determination to keep pushing forward. Blackburn manager John Eustace highlighted his team’s defensive discipline and criticized the penalty decision, hinting that the Elland Road crowd influenced the referee. The result leaves Leeds three points clear at the top, missing an opportunity to widen their lead. Blackburn still winless in four games, showcased resilience against the league leaders.
