Doug Pederson Parts Ways with Jacksonville Jaguars
Doug Pederson has parted ways with the Jacksonville Jaguars after three seasons as head coach. Pederson, 56, took over in 2022 following a tough two years for the franchise which had won only four games. Under his leadership, the Jaguars posted a 9-8 record in his first two seasons including a playoff win in his debut year. However, the team regressed in the 2023 season, finishing with a disappointing 4-13 record.
Team owner Shahid Khan praised Pederson’s achievements but emphasized the need for change. “Doug is an accomplished football man who will undoubtedly enjoy another chapter in his impressive NFL career,” Khan said. “I have an obligation to serve the best interests of our team and fans, and now is the time for new leadership.” Pederson’s departure makes him the second NFL head coach to be sacked following the season’s end, alongside Jerod Mayo of the New England Patriots.
Pederson had previously led the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl win in 2018 and he became the Jaguars’ fifth permanent head coach since Khan took over the franchise in 2012. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who signed a $275m contract extension last summer, faced multiple injuries this season, impacting his performance. Additionally, the Jaguars are planning to renovate their stadium, agreeing to a $1.4bn deal which could lead to the team playing more home games overseas during construction, as they have since 2013.
Khan expressed confidence that the team can return to winning ways, saying he is seeking a new coach who shares his vision for the Jaguars’ future. “I believe we can restore the winning environment here,” Khan added, hoping for a leader who can seize the opportunities ahead for the franchise.
