Dundee Defeats Dundee United 1-0 to Reach Scottish Cup Last 16

Dundee defeated city rivals Dundee United 1-0 at Dens Park to reach the last 16 of the Scottish Cup with Simon Murray scoring the only goal in the first minute. Murray flicked a header off Finlay Robertson’s in-swinging corner, giving Dundee the perfect start in a high-intensity match. This victory marked Dundee’s first win over United in nine meetings with their last triumph dating back to August 2017 in the League Cup. The hosts dominated the first half, pressing high, tackling strongly and creating several chances.
Murray had a close-range shot blocked while Aaron Donnelly narrowly missed with a header. United had two goals disallowed in the first half, one for offside and another for a foul. The second half remained just as intense with Dundee’s Lyall Cameron shooting just over and United’s Louis Moult and Kevin Holt failing to score. As United pushed for an equalizer, Ruari Paton ran into a brilliant block and Declan Gallagher and Will Ferry faced excellent saves from Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson.
In injury time, Kristijan Trapanovski curled a shot that hit the post and Dundee held on to secure the victory. Dundee manager Tony Docherty praised his team’s mentality and resilience, highlighting Murray’s work rate and the strong connection between players and fans. United manager Jim Goodwin acknowledged the poor start but praised his team’s second-half response, despite their inability to equalize. Dundee will now face Airdrieonians at home in the next round, set for the weekend of 8 February.
