Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton, both from Crystal Palace, have earned spots in England’s Euro 2024 squad, while notable omissions comprise Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire and James Maddison. Eberechi Eze, who has only earned three caps, showcased impressive skills during England’s recent friendly victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina. During the same match, Wharton marked his debut by entering the field as a substitute player. This significant moment represented the beginning of Wharton’s international career.

Earlier announcements indicated the exclusion of Grealish, Maguire, and Maddison, as well as Burnley’s James Trafford, Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.  Despite initially being included in the 33-player shortlist, they were ultimately left out of the squad. Notably, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, despite his recent absence due to injury, has made the squad. England’s final match before the tournament will be against Iceland, with Quansah remaining with the squad as a precaution for any further defensive issues.

Manager Gareth Southgate characterized the squad selection process as challenging. He also acknowledged the disappointment experienced by those left out of the squad. Concerns over Maguire’s fitness, particularly considering his recent injury woes, influenced his exclusion from the squad. Conversely, the decisions regarding Maddison and Grealish were challenging but ultimately deemed necessary for optimizing the team’s performance.
