Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo, 22 has tragically passed away after being seriously injured in a car crash on October 7. The LDU Quito midfielder had been in hospital since the accident which occurred in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. Angulo underwent multiple surgeries and spent over a week in intensive care before passing away on Monday night.

LDU Quito, the club where Angulo played announced his death with deep sorrow, describing it as an “irreparable loss” and expressing condolences to his family. FC Cincinnati, his parent club also expressed heartbreak at the loss. Angulo had joined LDU Quito on loan in March 2024 with an option to buy after a single season with FC Cincinnati. He made 16 appearances for LDU Quito with his last match on October 6 just one day before the crash.

Angulo made his international debut for Ecuador in November 2022 in a 0-0 draw against Iraq, earning three caps for his country. The Ecuadorian Football Association expressed its condolences, praising Angulo as not only a skilled player but also a beloved teammate. Reports from Ecuador reveal that two other individuals, Independiente del Valle player Roberto Cabezas and his friend Victor Carcopa also died in the crash.

Two other passengers were in the car but their condition remains unknown. Angulo’s passing has left a profound impact on both his club and the football community with tributes pouring in from around the world.
