Edu has resigned from his position as Arsenal’s sporting director, a role he took on in November 2022 after rejoining the club as technical director in summer 2019. The 46-year-old Brazilian, who played for Arsenal from 2001 to 2005 and was part of the ‘Invincibles’ team that won two league titles announced his decision on Monday, expressing that it was a challenging choice to make.

Edu shared, “Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.” He played a key role in hiring manager Mikel Arteta leading the club to an FA Cup victory in Arteta’s first season. Under Edu’s leadership, Arsenal has transformed into a serious title contender, finishing as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City in the last two seasons.

During his tenure, Edu was instrumental in the recruitment of significant players including captain Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice, all of whom have become essential to the team. However, some signings such as David Luiz and Willian did not have the same positive impact. All players in last Saturday’s starting XI were signed after Edu’s appointment except for academy star Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke expressed gratitude for Edu’s contributions and dedication to the club, acknowledging the inevitability of change. Off the field, Arsenal has seen other leadership shifts including Richard Garlick as managing director and plans to appoint James King as director of football operations. The club did not comment when approached by the BBC regarding Edu’s resignation.
