England’s national women’s football team faces a crucial 2025 as they defend their European title in Switzerland. Alongside Euro 2025, Sarina Wiegman’s squad must navigate a tough Women’s Nations League campaign, making this year a critical one. The Lionesses’ journey to 2025 has been mixed. After winning Euro 2022 and the Finalissima trophy, expectations were high but last year brought challenges.

They struggled during Euro 2025 qualification with unconvincing performances against Sweden and France and their failure to qualify for the Olympic Games added to the pressure. Wiegman experimented with formations, leading to inconsistent results. Despite a disappointing defeat to Germany in October, midfielder Georgia Stanway remained positive, emphasizing that England was still in a long process of preparation for the Euros.

A key factor in England’s struggles has been the growing injury list. Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp, who had been in excellent form are out with long-term injuries. Additionally, Chelsea’s Lauren James and Manchester United’s Ella Toone have also been sidelined. However, there is some good news with Chelsea’s Niamh Charles and captain Leah Williamson returning from injuries.

Despite the setbacks, England’s future looks promising, with young talents stepping up. Grace Clinton impressed against Switzerland while Jess Park showed promise in the match against the USA. Other rising stars like Jess Naz, Laura Blindkilde Brown and Ruby Mace have also made their debuts and defender Maya le Tissier has become a key figure for Manchester United.

As England gears up for Euro 2025, Wiegman remains confident. The team is ranked fourth in the world and has the potential to compete against top sides like Spain and Germany. The Lionesses must stay focused, believe in their ability and aim to defend their title in Switzerland.
