England’s search for a new manager began three months ago following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. England Under-21s head coach Lee Carsley took over as interim manager but his chances of securing the role permanently diminished following a 2-1 defeat to Greece in the Nations League. After Southgate stepped down in July, BBC Sport presented seven candidates for the job with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp leading the vote at 29% while Carsley garnered only 7%.

However, the managerial landscape has shifted since then, as high-profile options like Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino have taken new roles. Carsley remains a front-runner despite the setback against Greece, having previously maintained a 100% win record with an appealing style of play. His tactical choices against Greece, particularly using Jude Bellingham as a false nine, raised some eyebrows.

Carsley has indicated that if he does not secure the senior position, he may return to his Under-21s role. Pep Guardiola, currently managing Manchester City has expressed a desire to coach a national team. His contract expires at the end of the season and City is eager to extend his deal. As a result, the Football Association may have to decide whether to wait for his potential availability.

Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe was the most favored English candidate known for his successful tenure with the Magpies. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has taken on a role with Red Bull and seems unlikely to return to management. Graham Potter, the former Chelsea manager, remains available and open to the idea of national team management.

Meanwhile, Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town has a growing reputation but may prefer to focus on club management. Other potential candidates for England’s managerial position include Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard, although Pochettino has already accepted a role with the United States.
