England’s Solid Defence Shines in 0-0 Draw with USA

England’s 0-0 draw with the United States showcased Sarina Wiegman’s plans for Euro 2025, with the team experimenting and putting in a solid defensive performance. Following disappointing results against Germany and South Africa, England made several tactical changes which included a shift in formation and position tweaks leading to a more resilient display. Although the game lacked clear-cut chances, the USA appeared more threatening with an offside goal and a penalty overturned by VAR.

England’s defense held strong with goalkeeper Mary Earps delivering key saves and leading the backline in a 4-4-2 formation. This formation, reminiscent of England’s run to the 2023 Women’s World Cup final provided more solidity and cohesion. Earps praised the communication and trust among the defence, acknowledging that while it had been a tough year, this result was a positive step toward Euro 2025.

Wiegman’s experimentation included positional changes for Alex Greenwood and Jess Carter, who moved from centre-back to left-back. Tottenham’s Jess Naz and Lucy Bronze linked up on the right side and Jess Park was deployed in midfield. These changes seemed to work well at times with Greenwood noting that England showed positive signs especially in their defensive play against one of the world’s best teams.

Despite the defensive improvements, England’s lack of attacking threat was evident, partly due to injuries to key players like Lauren Hemp, Ella Toone and Lauren James. While former England striker Ian Wright criticized the team’s lack of attacking ambition, Wiegman defended the team’s approach emphasizing the focus on defense and the challenging nature of the game. She noted that England aimed for a win but the match’s intensity meant they had to focus on their defensive shape.
