Alexander Isak scored a hat-trick as Newcastle United comfortably beat Ipswich Town, who are still without a home league win this season. The visitors wasted no time, opening the scoring just 26 seconds into the match. Ipswich’s poor clearance allowed Jacob Murphy to cross the ball and after an offside call was overturned by VAR, Isak fired in the rebound. Murphy added a second, firing off the underside of the crossbar after a great assist from Anthony Gordon.
Ipswich, who haven’t won at home since April 2002 saw their hopes of a comeback dashed just before halftime. In injury time, Bruno Guimaraes intercepted a poor pass from Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric and Alexander Isak easily scored his second. Nine minutes into the second half, Isak completed his hat-trick by tapping in from another assist by Murphy. Newcastle’s victory capped off an impressive week having beaten Leicester 4-0 and reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Brentford.
Isak’s hat-trick brought his Premier League tally to 10 goals this season, just three behind top scorers Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland. Ipswich promoted back to the Premier League after back-to-back promotions, struggled throughout and rarely tested Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka. Missing suspended top scorer Liam Delap, Ipswich managed only a few shots off target. The result leaves Ipswich still searching for their first home win of the season, with tough upcoming fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea.
Newcastle dominated the match from start to finish and despite missing a few chances could have won by an even larger margin. The victory reinforces their solid start to the season as they continue to bounce back from last season’s missed European qualification.
