Alisson Urges Liverpool to Create Their Own History
Alisson, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, has urged his team to “create our own history” as they chase the Premier League title in their first season under manager Arne Slot. The Reds currently sit six points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal. Alisson part of Liverpool’s title-winning squad under Jurgen Klopp in 2019-20, reflected on that memorable season but emphasized the uniqueness of the current campaign.
“That team was really special,” he said. “We achieved great things, including the first Premier League title in 30 years and a Champions League win the year before. But there is no comparison. This group has the quality and commitment to achieve something special too.” Nine players from the 2019-20 squad, including Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson remain key contributors this season.
They have been joined by newer additions such as midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch as well as attackers Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo. Under Slot, who arrived from Feyenoord in the summer, Liverpool have adopted a more possession-focused tactical approach compared to Klopp’s high-intensity, transition-heavy style. “It’s a little bit different,” Alisson explained. “We play with more ball possession now, whereas before it was very straightforward with a lot of intensity.”
Alisson urged the squad to focus on writing their own story rather than drawing comparisons to past teams. Liverpool’s title-winning season under Klopp saw them hold the lead throughout, but they have also experienced losing a significant advantage in the past. As they prepare to face West Ham on Sunday, Alisson reminded his teammates of the importance of staying committed: “This season is about us. We have to create our own history.”
