Ange Postecoglou: Salah Wouldn't Shine in Struggling Spurs Team
Ange Postecoglou believes that even in-form Mohamed Salah would struggle in Tottenham’s current setup, given the team’s ongoing challenges. As Spurs prepare for their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday, Postecoglou reflects on the team’s recent poor form which includes three losses and one draw from their last four matches. The team also suffered a 6-3 Premier League defeat to Liverpool in December where Salah scored twice.
Despite Salah’s impressive individual performance, having netted 21 goals in 27 appearances this season, Postecoglou argues that even a player of his caliber wouldn’t be able to perform at his usual level in the struggling Tottenham side. Postecoglou explains that Salah thrives in a team that is in good form, creating chances and playing with a solid defensive foundation—qualities that Spurs are currently lacking.
He emphasizes that football is a team sport and Salah’s talents would be compromised without a well-functioning team around him. Looking ahead to the Carabao Cup clash, Spurs received some positive news with captain Son Heung-min activating an option to extend his contract until at least the summer of 2026. Son has scored seven goals this season but Postecoglou feels his form hasn’t been fully reflective of his true ability especially when compared to Salah.
He suggests that if Son were playing for Liverpool, his goal-scoring record would likely improve. Ange Postecoglou remains confident that once Tottenham return to their best form, Son’s ability to score and contribute significantly to the team will be evident.
