Antony has been challenged by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to “earn the right” to play for the team. Antony joined United for £82 million from Ajax in 2022 making him the club’s second-most expensive signing after Paul Pogba. However, the 24-year-old has struggled to justify his price tag, scoring only five goals and providing three assists in 55 Premier League appearances.

Last season, he managed just one goal and one assist as United finished eighth. This season, Antony has barely featured, playing only a brief one-minute cameo against Brighton. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo have taken priority in attack with all of them already scoring this season which increases the pressure on Antony to step up.

Although Turkish club Fenerbahce expressed interest in him before the transfer window closed, Antony remained at United. Ten Hag stressed that Antony must take responsibility for improving his situation. “He’s impatient and wants to play,” said the United boss. “But in top football, I pick the team with the best chemistry and dynamic.” Furthermore, Ten Hag highlighted the strong contributions from other attackers.

Antony must now outperform them in training to earn his place in the team. As United prepare for their Carabao Cup third-round tie against Barnsley, Ten Hag reinforced his stance: “You will see the line-up. Players must earn the right to play by showing the right attitude and performance in training.” Thus, Ten Hag’s message to Antony is clear. Consistent hard work and standout performances in training will be crucial for earning more opportunities on the pitch.
