Chelsea currently leads the Premier League in yellow cards after a tumultuous 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest raised concerns about the team’s discipline. Manager Enzo Maresca downplayed worries regarding this issue although the Blues now face a £50,000 automatic fine following referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to issue six yellow cards during the match.

The Football Association is also reviewing the referee’s report to determine if further actions are necessary, especially since forward Nicolas Jackson allegedly slapped Forest defender Morato during an on-pitch altercation. Chelsea’s Cole Palmer notably opted to sit out of a skirmish, showcasing a contrasting approach amidst the chaos. So far this season, Chelsea has accumulated 27 bookings, more than any other Premier League team.

Defenders Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, who have each received five yellow cards will miss the upcoming match against Liverpool on October 20. Chelsea also holds the Premier League record for the most yellow cards in a single season, totaling 105 last year. Discipline issues have persisted since before Maresca took over in June.  Former manager Mauricio Pochettino addressed the problem, labeling many of the bookings as “silly.”

He attempted to correct the players’ behaviors through video analysis. The average age of the Chelsea squad has dropped to 23.4 following Thiago Silva’s departure contributing to potential immaturity on the field. Under both Pochettino and Maresca, Chelsea has implemented an aggressive, possession-based style of play which can often lead to tactical fouls.

Maresca has expressed satisfaction with the team’s fighting spirit even after receiving a second fine for yellow cards this season. He acknowledged the need for improvement but remains positive about the squad’s unity and determination.
