David Coote, the Premier League referee has been suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after a video surfaced online. The video allegedly shows Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and its former manager, Jurgen Klopp. PGMOL confirmed Coote’s immediate suspension pending a full investigation. Although the video’s authenticity remains unverified, PGMOL is treating it as genuine.

In the widely shared video, a man believed to be Coote reportedly criticizes Klopp, calling him “arrogant” and using foul language. The comments appear to relate to a Liverpool-Burnley match in July 2020 which ended in a 1-1 draw. Following that match, Klopp was vocal about his frustration with Coote’s officiating arguing that Coote failed to call fouls against his players.

Meanwhile, David Coote, 42 officiated Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday and has served as a Premier League referee since 2018. Liverpool has acknowledged the video but has yet to comment publicly. Additionally, PGMOL stated it would not provide further updates until the investigation concludes. English Football League chairman Rick Parry commended PGMOL for its swift response.

As a Premier League referee, Coote must disclose the club he supports. Being from Nottingham, he identifies as a Notts County fan which restricts him from officiating matches involving his team or Nottingham Forest. In the video, the man referenced the July 2020 Burnley game in which Klopp criticized Coote for allowing what he perceived as excessive physical challenges by Burnley.

Subsequently, Liverpool’s loss to Arsenal dashed their hopes of achieving a 100-point season that year.
