Enzo Maresca Confident Chelsea's Future Is Bright
Enzo Maresca believes the club can “dominate” the Premier League in the next five to ten years, despite their current position in the table. While Chelsea sit third, level on points and goal difference with Arsenal, Maresca insists the team is not yet ready for a title challenge this season. Despite a solid 3-0 win over Aston Villa that pushed Chelsea above Manchester City, they trail league leaders Liverpool by nine points.
Maresca downplayed Chelsea’s immediate chances of winning the Premier League, highlighting the squad’s inexperience as a major factor. The team’s average age is just over 23 and while players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson are hitting their peak, Maresca believes the team is still developing. He reiterated that Chelsea is not in the title race this season but is focused on long-term success.
Having spent over £1.5bn on transfers under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s ownership, the club has invested heavily in young players with long contracts, bolstering their squad. Maresca expressed confidence that with time, Chelsea will dominate English football, regardless of the manager. He told the club’s owners and directors that in the next 5-10 years, Chelsea would be a dominant force. Maresca also downplayed the significance of immediate targets, focusing on building something substantial for the future.
He stated that he is not preoccupied with season-to-season goals but rather with developing a strong foundation for years to come. In terms of injuries, Enzo Maresca confirmed that Wesley Fofana would be out for “weeks” with a hamstring issue alongside captain Reece James, further limiting Chelsea’s options. Despite these setbacks, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea’s future prospects.
