Erling Haaland took a different route from many of his Manchester City teammates spending the summer helping his father with wood chopping instead of playing international football. Although he would have preferred to play in the Euros with Norway, their failure to qualify meant Haaland’s summer consisted of chores and relaxation. This break appears to have rejuvenated him.
In just two games this season, Haaland has already scored four goals including a hat-trick in Saturday’s 4-1 win against Ipswich. His impressive form has seen him double the tally of any other player so far, prompting excitement from manager Pep Guardiola. Guardiola noted Haaland’s improved condition this season, attributing it to the lack of a summer tournament.
“He arrived really well this season,” Guardiola said. “He feels better than in previous seasons and is a crucial player for us.” Erling Haaland has been the Premier League’s top scorer for the past two seasons with 36 goals in the 2022-23 season and 27 last season despite injury setbacks. He is now just six goals away from reaching 100 for Manchester City in only 101 appearances.
Guardiola praised Haaland’s remarkable statistics, comparing his goal-scoring potential to that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Saturday’s game also marked the return of Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City. The former captain, who rejoined City after a season with Barcelona received a hero’s welcome with a standing ovation when he came on in the second half.
Gundogan, who helped City win the Premier League five times during his first spell is expected to provide valuable experience as City aims for a fifth consecutive title. He expressed his joy at returning, saying, “It feels like I have never been away. I am very proud to be back.”
