Fabian Schar Salvages Point for Newcastle

Fabian Schar scored a late equalizer to earn Newcastle a 3-3 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool in a thrilling match at St James’ Park. Liverpool seemed on course to secure a win after Mohamed Salah’s brace put them 3-2 ahead with seven minutes left. However, Schar volleyed in a free-kick delivery that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher failed to claim ensuring a deserved point for Newcastle. Newcastle showed early intent with Jacob Murphy hitting the post and Alexander Isak stunning the visitors with a brilliant long-range strike.

Anthony Gordon nearly doubled their lead shortly after but his shot was saved by Kelleher. Liverpool responded early in the second half when Curtis Jones fired in a first-time strike from Salah’s cross to level the score. Gordon then gave Newcastle the lead again, cutting inside a defender to score but Salah soon equalized with a scooped finish before completing his double to put Liverpool ahead. However, Fabian Schar’s late goal denied Liverpool a crucial three points.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who has overseen impressive victories this season would have felt relief after the final whistle. Despite struggling with Newcastle’s press and their makeshift defense which couldn’t cope with Isak and Gordon, Liverpool showed their resilience. Salah’s two goals took him to 13 for the season, keeping him at the top of the scoring charts.

Despite a season of inconsistency, Newcastle demonstrated their potential to challenge for a top-four finish with this strong performance. Their intensity led by Isak, troubled Liverpool throughout and they earned a well-deserved point after fighting back following Salah’s second goal. This match highlighted Newcastle’s potential and their determination to compete at the highest level.
