Ipswich Town has bolstered their squad with two significant signings ahead of their Premier League return. They have acquired Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers and Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City. Szmodics, the Championship’s top scorer last season with 27 goals, joins Ipswich on a four-year contract for a fee of £9 million plus add-ons. Meanwhile, Phillips, the 28-year-old England midfielder, arrives on a season-long loan. Ipswich will make their Premier League debut after a 22-year absence with a home match against Liverpool on Saturday at 12:30 BST.
Szmodics expressed his excitement about reaching the top tier, stating, “It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Premier League. I’ve always told my friends, family, and agents that I’ll make it to the top one day.” The Republic of Ireland international, who has been a standout performer, is eager to make his mark in the Premier League. Phillips joins Ipswich following a challenging period at Manchester City. After a £45 million move from Leeds United two years ago, Phillips struggled to secure a regular spot in City’s starting lineup.
A loan spell at West Ham last season aimed to boost his England prospects for Euro 2024 but injuries and poor form hampered his chances. Now, Phillips is looking forward to playing regularly and contributing to Ipswich’s Premier League campaign. “This is a day I’ve been waiting for, and I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “I want to play as many games as possible and help the team win.”
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna praised Phillips, highlighting his experience and high caliber, both at club and international levels.
