Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a brilliant goal to secure Crystal Palace’s first Premier League away win of the season, defeating Ipswich Town 1-0 at Portman Road. The match saw both teams with nine points at the start, near the bottom of the table but it was Mateta’s 59th-minute strike that made the difference. The forward played a part in the goal from his own half, flicking the ball on before charging forward, evading Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves and then chipping past goalkeeper Arijanet Muric from a tough angle.

Prior to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal, the match had been uneventful with few chances created. A notable off-field issue occurred earlier when Palace captain Marc Guehi wrote a religious message on his rainbow armband for the second consecutive game defying FA guidance. Ipswich’s Sam Morsy also did not wear the rainbow armband, citing his religious beliefs.

Mateta almost doubled Palace’s lead when played through by Eberechi Eze, but he shot straight at Muric. Ipswich, who had been strong at home this season, struggled to break down Palace’s defense. Despite some pressure in the final stages including a header from Jacob Greaves that hit the post, Ipswich couldn’t find an equalizer.

The win lifts Crystal Palace to 16th place in the standings, easing their early relegation concerns. After a difficult start to the season, manager Oliver Glasner’s team has now lost just once in their last six matches. Ipswich still without a home win this season remain 19th and will hope to improve in upcoming December fixtures.
