Joelinton’s goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for 10-man Newcastle over newly promoted Southampton in a tense opening-day match at St James’ Park. Just before half-time, Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy made a poor pass. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak seized the chance to set up Joelinton, who scored with Joelinton’s only shot on target.

The goal came 17 minutes after Newcastle defender Fabian Schar received a red card for headbutting Ben Brereton Diaz, who had shoved Schar. The referee’s decision to send off Schar stirred up St James’ Park with the home fans rallying their team as they defended against Southampton’s barrage of attacks. Tempers flared further during half-time as both teams clashed in the tunnel.

In the second half, Southampton came close to equalizing with Brereton Diaz’s effort saved by a superb clearance off the line from Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. Despite Southampton’s 19 shots, they failed to score. Newcastle, aiming to return to the Champions League after their group-stage exit last season, will build on this win to target a higher league position.

Eddie Howe’s team, bolstered by players like Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes will continue to strengthen their squad, having had bids for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi rejected. Their next match is against Bournemouth on 25 August. Southampton’s loss is disappointing given their dominance in possession, having controlled 70% of the game before Newcastle’s red card.

Despite the defeat, Southampton’s performance shows promise for improvement, especially if they can enhance their finishing. They will look to bounce back in their upcoming home game against Nottingham Forest.
