Liverpool manager Arne Slot emphasized his players’ familiarity with high-pressure situations as they aim to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park. The Reds currently sit seven points clear, having drawn 3-3 with Newcastle midweek after beating Manchester City last weekend. Closest challengers Chelsea and Arsenal closed the gap with midweek wins while City remain nine points behind after defeating Nottingham Forest.
Slot acknowledged the constant expectations at a club like Liverpool: “Every day, there’s pressure to win and play good football. That’s part of playing for a big club like Liverpool, Arsenal, City or Chelsea. The players thrive under this pressure because they know they have the quality to deliver.” He contrasted this with the stress of battling relegation, saying it’s far more difficult when survival is on the line. Saturday’s clash is notable as potentially the last league derby at Goodison Park with Everton set to move to a new stadium next season.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s 2-0 loss in their last visit to Goodison, Slot highlighted the need for disciplined aggression, especially against Everton’s threat from set-pieces. “We have to match their work rate and be aggressive but smart,” he noted, stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary fouls. The Merseyside derby, famous for its intensity has seen 23 red cards during the Premier League era with 16 for Everton and seven for Liverpool.
Slot described the occasion as “special,” noting the historical significance of this being the final derby at Goodison. However, he underscored the priority of securing a positive result: “It’s only a nice experience if the result goes your way and that’s our main focus.”
