Liverpool now under Arne Slot’s management, have made a strong start to the Premier League season, transitioning smoothly from the Jurgen Klopp era. They head into the international break at the top of the table with their success built on a solid defensive foundation. The team has conceded just two goals in seven games and secured five clean sheets, boasting the league’s best defensive record so far.

Captain Virgil van Dijk credits the team’s defensive work, saying, “We keep going and keep working; everyone is contributing to the clean sheets.” Comparisons between Slot’s and Klopp’s defensive records are inevitable. Slot’s side has conceded fewer goals in the first seven games than any of Klopp’s teams with the closest being the 2018-19 season when Liverpool allowed only three goals.

The defense remains familiar, featuring stalwarts like Van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate, who Slot prefers as Van Dijk’s center-back partner. Slot’s defense plays a dual role, not only preventing goals but also playing a key part in initiating attacks. The team has faced fewer shots this season compared to last.

Their defensive control has clearly improved as Robertson highlighted after the 3-0 win over Manchester United. However, tougher tests await. While Liverpool’s start has been strong, Slot acknowledged that the fixtures have been relatively easier with five of their six wins coming against teams in the bottom half of the table. After the international break, they will face tougher opponents like Chelsea and Arsenal.

A key concern is the injury to goalkeeper Alisson, who may be out for weeks. Deputy Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to fill in, but with tougher fixtures ahead, Liverpool’s defensive resilience will be put to the test.
