Manchester City Manager Denies Rift with Kevin de Bruyne
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has denied reports of a rift with Kevin de Bruyne, insisting that no issues exist between him and the Belgian midfielder. Guardiola expressed his desire to see De Bruyne return to his best form, acknowledging the challenges caused by injuries that have hampered the 33-year-old’s season. De Bruyne has only started four Premier League matches this campaign, as injuries continue to affect him. He has made just five substitute appearances since recovering from an abdominal injury, playing a total of 72 minutes.
Guardiola brought him on in the 2-0 loss to Liverpool but De Bruyne had limited impact as Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher denied him during the match. After the defeat, pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville questioned Guardiola’s handling of De Bruyne, suggesting underlying tensions between the two. However, Guardiola strongly rejected such claims. He emphasized that no personal issue exists with De Bruyne, stressing his desperation for the player to return to his peak form.
Guardiola explained that De Bruyne’s recent struggles stem from his injury history and age, noting the significant setbacks he has suffered in recent years including a long-term hamstring injury that kept him out for several months last season. Guardiola also pointed out that De Bruyne’s talent remains undeniable despite his current challenges and expressed his frustration at not having the player fully fit.
As Kevin de Bruyne’s contract with Manchester City approaches its expiration next summer, he has not yet discussed an extension, focusing on his recovery. Guardiola acknowledged that while he would love to have De Bruyne in his prime, he understands the physical toll of a lengthy career and remains hopeful that the midfielder will soon regain his form.
