Manchester City’s hearing into 115 charges for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules began on Monday at London’s International Dispute Resolution Centre. The charges follow a four-year investigation with allegations that City violated financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The Premier League claims City failed to provide accurate financial information and did not cooperate fully during the investigation.

City strongly denies the charges, asserting that their defense is supported by “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence.” The case involves accusations of failing to accurately report club revenue including sponsorship income and operating costs. The Premier League also alleges that City did not cooperate with the investigation and breached UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Manchester City which has enjoyed significant success since its 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group describes the allegations as “entirely false” and resulting from “illegal hacking and out-of-context publication of City emails.” The hearing is expected to last around 10 weeks, potentially extending into late November. City manager Pep Guardiola expressed anticipation for the proceedings.

He emphasized that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. While an exact verdict date is not yet known, reports suggest a decision might come in early 2025. This case does not permit an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but either side could appeal the decision through a new independent panel. Legal costs for both parties are already estimated in the tens of millions with potential claims for costs anticipated.

Manchester City’s legal team is led by Lord Pannick KC known for his high-profile cases and substantial hourly fees.
