Manchester United’s Lack of Fight Exposed in 3-0 Spurs Defeat
Manchester United’s struggles under Erik ten Hag became evident in their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, particularly due to their lack of tenacity both on and off the ball. Danny Murphy emphasizes that United’s issues extend beyond poor possession play, as their defensive organization and fight without the ball pose major concerns. After Ten Hag criticized his team for lacking desire in their Europa League draw against Twente, many expected a response against Spurs.
However, Manchester United’s performance lacked intensity and they quickly fell behind, showing a flat mindset. Defensive errors, particularly during Micky van de Ven’s run that led to Tottenham’s first goal revealed their disorganization. United struggled to track runners, lost duels and allowed Spurs to dominate the game. Murphy points out that United can’t blame their defensive woes solely on a lack of pressing.
With Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Zirkzee playing as false nines, Ten Hag aimed to limit Spurs’ midfield dominance rather than press intensely. However, United lacked the physical readiness and discipline to track runners and win battles. Tottenham on the other hand, attacked bravely and confidently. Their center-backs played progressive passes that broke down United’s defense.
While United created some chances, their lack of confidence and cohesion, particularly in playing out from the back, remained a significant issue. In the second half after losing Bruno Fernandes to a red card, United fought harder with Casemiro and Mason Mount helping to stabilize the team. Yet Murphy questions why United couldn’t display that same determination when the game was still competitive.
