Mateus Fernandes has joined Southampton from Sporting Lisbon for a transfer fee of around £15 million. The 20-year-old Portugal Under-21 international has committed to a five-year contract with the Saints. Fernandes, who made five appearances for Sporting Lisbon’s first team, spent the previous season on loan at Estoril. During his loan spell, he featured in 28 Primeira Liga matches.
Consequently, his arrival at Southampton marks a significant step in his career as he transitions from Portuguese football to the Premier League. Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Fernandes described joining Southampton as a “dream come true.” He highlighted the Premier League as the “best league in the world,” praising its top-notch coaches, players and teams.
In addition, Fernandes sees this opportunity as crucial for his personal growth and development as a footballer. Moreover, Southampton manager Russell Martin has spoken highly of Fernandes, noting that the young midfielder possesses “key attributes” that will benefit the club in their Premier League campaign. Martin emphasized that Southampton had been monitoring Mateus Fernandes for some time.
He expressed excitement about his potential contribution to the team. The addition of Fernandes comes at a pivotal moment, as Southampton prepares for their next Premier League fixture. The team will face Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday, with the match scheduled to kick off at 15:00 BST. As Southampton continues to strengthen their squad, Fernandes’ arrival represents a strategic move aimed at enhancing the club’s midfield options.
This addition also aims to bolster their performance in the top flight of English football.
